is the mafia and italian word only meaning the italian mob? or can it stand for all mobs like the russian etc?
this question may sound a bit racist but i just want to know.
Actually the word “mafia” derives from an ancient Arab word (mahhiyah or something like it), whose original meaning was “to brag, to behave arrogantly”, and only centuries later came to mean an underworld organisation.
The word Mafia was used in Sicily to mean a group or clique, not necessarily with unlawful purposes, and only later became used to define crime syndicates alike with the “Camorra” in Naples and “‘Ndrangheta” in Calabria.
